Is Laundry-Trak® software 32-bit?

Yes. All components within Laundry-Trak® software are 32-bit.

Will it work on Vista? How about Windows 7, 8 or 10? 64-bit versions?

Yes. (See more below under Microsoft operating systems supported.)

Does Laundry-Trak® software run on a network, i.e. is it multi-user?

Yes. A standard Laundry-Trak® software purchase includes a license that has no specific user count or other limitation. (There are however practical concurrent use limitations depending on which record manager is used.)

What is the maximum number of concurrent users that is allowed?

Laundry-Trak® software imposes no maximum number of users. An appropriately sized database engine may be required for users of a certain size. Budget $50 per user for the database engine.

Is Laundry-Trak® software ODBC/OLEDB compliant?

Yes, it can be. Ask us for more details.

Can Laundry-Trak® software be set-up and run in a client-server configuration?

Yes. There are no program related changes, however, the user would need to use a specific client-server database. This engine does not come with standard Laundry-Trak® software and requires a separate purchase. The cost of the license depends on the number of users and the server configuration (Novell or Win NT/2000/2003/2008/2012 and equivalent SBS versions).

Does Laundry-Trak® software run on Linux?

Laundry-Trak® software data files can be placed on Linux box. The program itself however requires a Windows-based operating system in order to run. Users would connect to the Linux box via Samba.

What Microsoft operating systems does Laundry-Trak® software support?

The latest version of Laundry-Trak® software has been tested under WIN 95 (now no longer supported), 98SE, 2000, XP ("Professional" version is recommended) and various versions of Vista, Windows 7 (Professional or better recommended) and Windows 8 (Pro of higher recommended), and is commonly run in server environments including Server 2003/2008/2012. A legacy version ran on DOS versions 3.1-6.

How much memory does Laundry-Trak® software require?

There is no set memory requirement since if a PC has enough memory to properly run the version of Windows that has been installed, it will typically have more than enough memory to run Laundry-Trak® software.

What is required for those PC's that will be connected to a scale? For best performance, the PC should be equipped an actual serial port card. These provide more reliable performance than USB-serial cables. Nonetheless, you can also use USB-serial cables/converters. Starting with Vista/Win 7, changes made in these operating systems created problems when using a USB-serial cable interfaces (developers writing software in many different platforms/programming languages have reported the issue which has to do with the inability to close the scale port in the same running thread/instance). Starting with Laundry-Trak 7 rel. 11, features have been added to overcome these obstacles so that USB-serial cables can again be used if absolutely necessary (PC has insufficient space for a card, etc.). See the next topic if installation of the USB-Serial interface software leads to a problem commonly referred to by end users as the "jumping mouse" (completely unrelated to Laundry-Trak® software). An actual serial port involves a minimal (under $40) cost yet ensures reliable, dependable operation. Since new computers now typically do not include a pre-configured serial port, this simply needs to be taken into account when purchasing a new computer. Ensure that your PC has a sufficient number of internal expansion slots to accomodate the card. Purchase a PC with quality parts (which is not going to be the lowest cost computer available). Consider a local specialist for your purchase since you will need local hardware support at some point.

After installing USB-Serial cable interface software, my mouse cursor seems to jump all over the screen making my PC essentially unusable. What do I do?

The installation of USB-Serial interface software can create a mouse cursor conflict that is well known to GPS serial port users and with other types of software that accesses a serial port, and seems to be particularly common with Windows 7 (8 and 10) which tries to install support for a Microsoft serial port mouse along with the USB-Serial driver. First simply right click on the "Safely Remove Hardware" icon in your task bar and stop the USB driver software. Then using REGEDIT change the "Start" value of HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\SerMouse from 3 to 4 and reboot. We have found this necessary when installing for example the Prolific USB PL-2303 drivers which otherwise work nicely. For some background information, see Microsoft article 819036 which discusses its COMDisable tool (which is not effective however for newer operating systems such as Windows 7)

What communication ports can scales be connected to?

Laundry-Trak® software supports COM1 through COM8. The user can further set the baud rate (300 to 115200) as well as data, parity and stop bits. USB support can be provided to the extent the port can be redirected to a COM port (however it needs to be an actual installed card; USB-Serial cables/converters are not acceptable).

I use a scale with some of my computers, but not all of them. Is this supported?

Yes. Even though under Laundry-Trak® software setup you may have indicated that a scale is installed, you still have the flexibilty to have some PC's with scales attached and some that aren't. This also provides the abilities to set-up the appropriate scale settings for each scale. Through the scale configuration program, a scale can be disabled (and also re-enabled and prior settings restored).

I don't use a scale but want to enter in weights manually. Can I do that?

Yes. In the set-up program, you can indicate whether a scale has been installed. If not, the program will always stop and ask the user to input an appropriate weight. (If a scale is installed and the scale has actually been set-up has been set-up on a PC itself, the program will instead automatically attempt to read the weight.

Can Laundry-Trak® software be used with Microsoft's Remote Desktop remote control software? With Terminal Services or Citrix?

Yes. It has always been possible to use Laundry-Trak® software with remote control software. And, starting with release Laundry-Trak 7 rel. 11, specific support is even available for obtaining a scale weight from a local port via remote desktop. It is recommend that users that are routinely connecting via a remote connection (as in a multi-office situation) use a client-server engine.

What about back-ups?

Laundry-Trak® software has an included program to help in the backing up of essential data and other files. As with any database system, a user should have another means of backing up their system and the utility included with Laundry-Trak® software should be considered as secondary.

What other essential peripherals besides a back-up system should I have?

Every PC on your network should have a UPS (Unterruptible Power Supply). We have found that APC brand UPS units to be the best in the long run.

What user permissions should I grant users?

In the shared directory where Laundry-Trak® software is installed, users need to be able to have read rights in connection with all files. They also need write rights in connection with the data files (these all have *.B extension). Users also need to be able to create files under some circumstances. Any user who has access to utilities like the reindex program has to be able to create files without restriction in the application directory. Users will also need the ability to read and create files in the manifest subdirectory (default path being C:\LT7\MANIFEST\). Laundry-Trak® software also relies on certain INI files that a user needs to have write/delete access to. Starting with Laundry-Trak 7 ver. 8, these are stored in a SETTINGS subfolder under the main LT install and users need read/write access to that folder. There various INI files based in part on the user's computer name are stored. Users who have system maintenance access need to be able to write to the MENDLINE.TXT file stored in the same directory at the Laundry-Trak® programs. Users in essence need read/write/create access to the main LT folder as well as subfolders under the main software install/share.

Does Laundry-Trak® software make or rely upon registry settings?

Yes. The database engine does rely on certain registry entries. The Laundry-Trak® software engine executable also makes some limited registry entries.

In a client-server situation or in workgroups, does Laundry-Trak® software install any software anywhere than on the server or gateway PC?

Insofar as actual Laundry-Trak® software is concerned, no. In client-server engine deployments, a special install would be required. But there is no Laundry-Trak® software that is installed anywhere than on the server or gateway PC.

Can Laundry-Trak® software be connected to any accounting software packages?

Yes. A QuickBooks Pro interface has long been available and a Peachtree Complete interface was released in November, 2002 (then Laundry-Trak 6). Each of these options allows a user to import Laundry-Trak® data without the need for duplicate data entry. (Note: these interfaces require a separate purchase from Phoenix Scale and are not included in the standard package and apply to Laundry-Trak 7, not Laundry-Trak Express.)

I need to migrate the application to a new server. What do I do? Do I reinstall the application?

No, do not reinstall (and in fact never reinstall without consulting with us first; it would be an extreme and unusual situation indeed where we would ever advise a reinstall). Simply create a parallel folder name on the new server or gateway PC and copy the the entire LT software folder including all subfolders to the new server. Once copied, run NOTEPAD (run as admin if Windows 7/8/10 or 2008/2012/2016 Server) and view the TASPRO7.INI file in the new folder. In the initial [Setup] section, you may need to change the DataDictPath and DefaultPath settings to correspond to the new share. Save the INI file and proceed to run the WSETUP.EXE (run as admin as necessary) which will create an icon on the desktop. Verify that Laundry-Trak® software works directly from the new server or gateway PC. If so, then on the existing clients, the only thing you will need to is change the desktop icons to correctly point to the new UNC or drive mapped share.

My application seems to be running slowly. What can I do to speed it up?

There are many potential factors are work. Anti-virus and similar software is often the culprit. Exclude your Laundry-Trak® software folder and all subfolders from being scanned in real-time by essentially anything, most importantly anti-virus and similar software. Turning off Windows indexing and anything that might be suddenly trying to perform I/O operations is also recommended, again at the very least with respect to your Laundry-Trak® software folder. Do not back up your data files while the system is in use as a general rule. One user reports that increased responsivness was achieved by changing Microsoft Security Essentials settings to only scan incoming rather than outgoing files (although hypothetically this setting would have nothing to do with Laundry-Trak® software). On Windows 7, 8 and 10 you may find increased responsiveness generally by changing your advanced settings (right click on Computer) to "adjust for best performance" rather than accept the default. Remove unused programs and monitor running services and use the task manager to determine what processes are occupying the CPU's attention. Regularly check for and remove malware and adware which can greatly reduce the effectiveness of your PC. Some other categories of software (for example, music download software) can interfere with your PC's performance.
